Our Story
My name is Amber Hill and I’m a Black girl just trying to figure it out. For most of my adult life I have worked to balance being an anchor for my family with putting passion into my own dreams.
I am recognizing that when I invest in me first, I have so much more to give to the people around me. I want to encourage fellow women of color to aspire for the same sentiment. We are so much more than what we do for others.
You are so much more that what you do for others, what job or certifications you have, and which designer clothes your 18 month old is wearing. You have invested so much of yourself into your career and into your family, but what investment have you made to your happiness or peace?
You don’t have to sacrifice enormous parts of yourself in order to feel worthy. Balance is a possibility for you and you are the only one that can create a balanced like for yourself. Let’s quiet the guilt, low self esteem, and other noise telling you that you have to continue to sacrifice to be worthy.
The only validation or permission you need to live a fulfilling life comes from you. Let’s think about how productive you could truly be if you actually had the energy to complete the task you identified as important.
Many of us play huge roles in the lives of the people around us. We may have a big role at work. We may be someone’s wife and/or mom.
We may play the anchor role, helping to guide other members of our family. Long story short, people depend on us… A LOT.
We have seen this play out over and over again with our moms, grandmas, aunts, sisters, friends, and with US.
We were taught that our sacrifices help our family move forward. Some of us are even taught that taking care of ourselves is SELFISH.
So we mindlessly move from day to day, constantly putting out fires that come up at work and home, because if it wasn’t for us, how would these people SURVIVE? But most of us don’t have anything (but feeling overwhelmed) to show for this.
Most of us feel like we are barely getting by even though we put a ton of effort into everything that we do. Then we get the courage to take a day off from work, get our nails done, finally go to the gym, but the guilt starts pouring in. Then we go back into our cycle of overdoing, overworking, and overanalyzing EVERYTHING, which just makes us feel more stuck and tired.
I am challenging you to step into your main character era, which simply means making your life more about YOU. I want us to challenge expectations, cultural values, mindsets that encourage this cycle of burnout. Join me in helping you unlock your fullest potential and start living a life you LOVE!
